Thassos, known as the “Emerald Island” of the northern Aegean, is a destination where lush green mountains meet crystal-clear seas. The settlement of Kinira, located on the island’s eastern coast, is a peaceful base for exploring Thassos’s many beaches, ancient sites, and traditional villages. It offers a quiet atmosphere, a few family-run tavernas serving fresh seafood, and wonderful views of the small uninhabited Kinira Island just offshore.

Just a couple of minutes ride from the premises, dining options and a convenient supermarket for your daily needs can be found.



Just two kilometers south of Kinira lies Paradise Beach, one of the most famous beaches on Thassos. With soft golden sand, turquoise water, and pine-covered hills, it’s ideal for swimming and relaxation. The sea is shallow, making it perfect for families, while the surrounding scenery gives the beach its name. Kinira itself has its own small beach, a calm and scenic spot for a morning swim or an evening stroll.



A short drive further south, about six kilometers from Kinira, is Aliki Beach, a double bay combining natural beauty and archaeological interest. Visitors can swim in its clear waters, explore the ancient marble quarries, and walk among the ruins of an early Christian sanctuary overlooking the sea. Another four kilometers along the coast is Livadi Beach, a more secluded cove of pebbles near the Monastery of Archangel Michael, offering tranquility and dramatic rocky landscapes.



For those seeking a livelier atmosphere, Psili Ammos Beach, about twelve kilometers south of Kinira, is popular for its soft sand, beach bars, and energetic summer vibe. In the opposite direction, heading north toward the island’s capital, Limenas, you’ll find Saliara or Marble Beach, roughly twenty-three kilometers from Kinira. Famous for its bright white marble pebbles and striking turquoise water, it’s one of the most photogenic beaches on the island, though the final stretch of road is unpaved.



Beyond its beaches, Thassos offers much to see and do. The ancient ruins of Aliki, just six kilometers south of Kinira, reveal the island’s long history of marble quarrying and trade. The Monastery of Archangel Michael, around ten kilometers south, stands dramatically on a cliff above the sea and is the most important monastery on the island, with panoramic views across the Aegean to Mount Athos.



From Kinira, visitors can also reach Theologos, a traditional mountain village about fifteen kilometers to the southwest, known for its stone architecture, narrow streets, and excellent local cuisine, especially slow-roasted lamb. Further south near Astris, about fourteen kilometers from Kinira, lies Giola, a natural rock pool often called the “natural lagoon of Thassos,” where adventurous swimmers can take a dip in crystal-clear seawater surrounded by stone cliffs.



Limenas, the island’s capital, is about twenty-five kilometers north of Kinira and combines ancient history with modern life. Visitors can explore archaeological sites such as the ancient theater and agora, browse small shops, and enjoy dinner by the harbor.



While staying in Kinira, visitors should not miss tasting local specialties such as honey, olive oil, and Thassian wine, all produced on the island. A drive around the island’s coastal road, roughly 100 kilometers in total, is a memorable way to experience its varied landscapes, from pine forests and mountain villages to hidden coves and bustling resorts.



Thassos offers a balance of serenity and discovery, and from Kinira, every corner of the island is within easy reach, whether one seeks quiet beaches, cultural heritage, or the simple beauty of the Aegean Sea.
