VILLA GATTAIOLA is an antique villa built in the 17th Century by a Noble Family (The family Mansi) in the outskirts of Lucca town centre, among olives trees and vineyards. It lies on the top of a hill in the South-West area of the Lucca countryside only 4 km from its ancient city's Walls. It is completely surrounded by greenery and far from any noises. The garden is surrounding the house and offers the guests a truly unforgettable greenery all around. Quietness and peacefulness is what you will find there. This a corner of paradise, just 5 minutes driving from everything!!
We had a beautiful 10 day stay at Villa Gattaiola. Monica was super helpful. We were a group of 11 adults and one baby, the villa was perfect for us. Not too far from Lucca walls, easy to get to from Pisa airport. The villa is cool in the evenings, the showers worked perfectly, the pool is a fabulous area and we would highly recommend. Thank you.
The villa is beautiful and very spacious on a large property, surrounded by an olive orchard. The pool is amazing with incredible views of the mountains in the distance. Make sure to visit the winery that is only a 5 minute walk away! The town of Lucca is great - keep in mind you will need a car to get there, or book transportation. Our contact was helpful in answering any questions. The villa is over 200 yrs old, so don't expect modern bathrooms etc, but that is part of the experience. Only minor complaint is that they only provide enough dish soap, toilet paper, dishwasher soap etc. to start and I think more should be provided for the entire visit. Note that there is a big set of stairs (about 25 steps) to get upstairs that may be a challenge for elderly guests or others. 2 bedrooms are on the main floor. I would highly recommend this villa.
The villa is semi detached which we were surprised at , however the other part of the villa did not appear occupied , it looked somewhat delapidated. The part we stayed in was beautifully furnished . Majority of the bedrooms were of a good size . The bathrooms were somewhat disappointing and the showers were haphazard as could not all be used at the same time - in fact worked best when used one at a time . There were many items lacking in the kitchen which was small in relation to how many the villa slept - a small bbq also which was disappointing . The gardens although vast were not maintained particularly well and needed some TLC ( mowing / weeding etc ) the pool was lovely and there were enough sunbeds . We enjoyed our stay but felt that a little more attention to small details would have better reflected the price - eg - only 2 teatowels, no duvet covers just a sheet , but these are minor and easily rectified . All in all a lovely stay .
My family of 10 (2 grandparents, 4 adults, 4 children) all had a wonderful time at this property! Monica (the property manager) was excellent to work with - very responsive and helpful. The space is incredible, offering a really nice layout and a nice master on the first floor that was nice for my parents (73, 75) and plenty of space for the kids. Each room was incredibly comfortable and all but one bedroom upstairs had an AC splitter. The pool was even more beautiful then the pictures!
We did lose the hot water on the 2nd floor one evening and someone was at the house by 10am fixing it. They were so kind and I was so impressed by how quickly they resolved it.
Monica also recommended a few chef's that new the space well and did an amazing job. I especially enjoyed chef Alice (i cannot stress how much we enjoyed her cooking!!!) so if you have a large group, i would definitely recommend it!
One note that maybe should be mentioned at check in. There are two places in the Lucca area that have the exact same address according to GPS so a few times taxis drove us all over the place!! When ordering a cab, you definitley need to say GATTAIOLA along with the address. Also, the best app to get a taxi is appTaxi. Everytime we tried to call for a taxi - there was no answer.
Again, I cannot express how much we loved this property and hope to come back again!
Ours day in Luca was overall very nice. We loved the city within the walls. A few things that wouldâve made this trip better at the Villa would have been for us to know that we needed to bring items with us for our stay. The mosquitoes were awful outside and it wouldâve been nice to know that we needed UGG spray before we got there. Also, there were not enough supplies for us during our trip. Only one garbage bag, no paper towels, no toilet paper or items necessary for the kitchen.
Villa Gattaiola is a rustic Villa in a beautiful setting in the hills above Lucca. It is authentic! We enjoyed the "no neighbors" aspect. Access to town was easy. The pool was a lovely place to relax in the afternoon after a long hot day of sightseeing.
The downstairs bedrooms have no AC so the guests there were a little uncomfortable at night and one was very allergic to mosquitoe bites so they couldn't open the windows with no screens. Temperatures were in the high 90's each day so a stay there in cooler weather would be nice. We had some difficulty with spotty WiFi. The upstairs had loss of hot water for a day but the management promptly fixed it. Overall, it was a comfortable stay. We did day trips everyday and ate out most meals. It's a good value and has a lot of character if you're not looking for a plush resort. Plenty of spacious rooms for our group of 9.
