26a Marygate is part of the conversion of the former York Post Office Club and has been beautifully done. This part of the building has just three two bedroom apartments, each one finished to an extremely high standard. The building is situated off Bootham on a quiet street, facing the historic ruins of St Mary's Abbey. First built in 1088 it is all that remains of one of the wealthiest and most powerful Benedictine monasteries in England.

Garden View Apartment - is situated on the second floor of the building. As it is situated at the top of the building you have a birds eye view of Museum gardens and the Abbey Ruins. The huge arched windows ensure that the apartment is flooded with light. The refurbishment hasn't encroached on the magnificence of the windows, and the light airy feeling is continued through the apartment with the high ceilings and light wood floors. The designer has furnished the apartment with an eye on both the comfort and enjoyment of the guest. The Living area has a striking dining table with more than enough space for everyone to sit down together. The kitchen is fully fitted with everything that you could possibly need and there is still space left over for you to store your holiday treats! There is a separate laundry room set just inside the front door, housing a washer/dryer and plenty of storage.

The lounge area has comfortable, stylish seating and a large smart TV for those times when you just want to stay inside and just kick back and relax.

There are two bedrooms in the apartment, the master bedroom has a super kingsize bed that can be made up as a super king or two single beds, just great for sinking into and recharging for the next day. There are fitted wardrobes that run the length of the bedroom, more than enough space to fit all the outfits that you want to bring with you for the numerous events that York has to offer. There is also a luxurious en suite, complete with a bath with shower over, double sinks and underfloor heating.

The second bedroom again has wall to wall storage and a wonderful double bed to sink into at the end of a very busy day of fun! The house bathroom serves this bedroom and has a walk in shower, again with underfloor heating.

There is dedicated onsite parking for the apartment.

Short break in York

We had a great time in York. The apartment was close to the Minster & all the attractions. It was nice to have a welcome pack. The place was well furnished; very clean and it had everything we needed for a short break

Garden View was excellent choice for two couples Great location Downside was that the windows can't be opened - is to be a ventilation system but it's not clearly explained - it might get very hot and uncomfortable in the summer Kitchen was generally well equipped, but it would benefit from more roasting pans/dishes

Great location, high end apartment

Excellent location for York city centre, this is a stylish apartment thoughtfully kitted out. It was really cold in York and once we’d turned the radiators up this place was really warm despite having high vaulted ceilings and large windows. Two minutes walk to a Sainsbury’s local meaning you could just pick things up as you needed them. Would happily stay again. The parking space is a great extra too.

Wonderful apartment

We loved our stay in this wonderful flat ideally located in York. The parking spot located right next to the flat was especially appreciated after numerous other trips to York and previous long walks necessary for parking.The apartment is close to shops and pubs but still very quiet. We would highly recommend it to anyone traveling to York. And thank you for the wonderful welcome basket!

Beautiful apartment

Lovely clean and comfy apartment. Fabulous welcome pack. As with other reviews it was a very warm apartment. Great to have parking on-site and it was very close to York centre. The only negative is could do with a small coffee table, would definitely stay again.

Fantastic base for exploring York

Marygate apartment was absolutely perfect for our needs. The flat itself surpassed expectations in terms of its design and appearance. A beautiful, clean, minimalist space that has been carefully designed and very tastefully decorated. Rooms are very large and comfortable with high ceilings and beautiful windows. It also managed to feel very comfortable and homely. Fittings and appliances are all very high quality and was spotless. We were here with young children and it suited that element of our needs very well too. No exposed staircases to worry about etc etc. Marygate apartment is a perfect location from which to explore York - a couple of minutes walk from the Minster. I'd highly recommend staying here. We will hopefully be back.

Lovely contemporary apartment in an old building. Fabulous location. Our only negative is that it is too warm. Only one window opens so it was too difficult to keep cool even though fans were provided.

Garden View Apartment York

Spacious, bright, and comfortable apartment. Excellent location facing York Gardens. Very good quality decoration. Well equipped. Everything impeccable. Perhaps the only criticism I could make is that you can't open the windows (except in the second bedroom). Otherwise, excellent and highly recommendable.

A lovely spacious apartment in a great location. Very clean and well maintained. The only negative is the lack of ventilation! Only able to open 1 window, which was not enough. It was so stuffy even with the fans on. You should be able to open a window in the lounge and other bedroom.

This beautiful apartment is top notch. We stayed as a family of 4 for two nights and we wished we could have stayed longer. We had everything we needed and more, including a washing machine, iron/ironing board as well as a hair dryer in both bedrooms. The apartment is beautifully decorated and extremely spacious. Our daughters did not want to leave. Special thanks to Chris Saunders for recommending this gem of an apartment. We're looking forward to visiting again next year.

Great Location, very nice apartment with plenty of natural light!

Overall our stay was great, the Apartment suited our requirements, spacious, alot of natural light, great kitchen, 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and a laundry. The beds were comfortable, however the pillows were very uncomfortable, after requesting some better pillows, the Property Manager contacted the owner to which they kindly agreed to provide some new pillows, which the Property Manager arranged and delivered which was great. Thanks for accommodating this. The only other feedback is we didn't find the lounge to be very comfortable. It was great to have the parking spot right outside as the surrounding area was generally quite busy. Other than that, the apartment is great, in a fantastic location and would highly recommend.

Excellent location

We have stayed once before in the apartment and re-booked it as it is in such a great location with everything in walkable distance, but it is still very quiet. The apartment is clean and comfortable. We ate out all the time, but the kitchen seemed to have most basics you would need to prepare a meal. When we arrived on what was a warm day, the heating was on which made the first couple of hours uncomfortable as only one window in the whole apartment seems to open (in the second bedroom). As the week became warmer, this also made for some uncomfortable nights as there was no fresh air circulating. There is a fan in the larger bedroom. Customer service was not as good as for our first visit; it was disappointing that an arrangement checked and agreed at booking was not recorded on their system.

Plush central York apartment with it's own parking onsite.

A fantastic top floor apartment just a short walk from the Minster and the city walls. Everything is close by and to have parking in the mews behind makes this an excellent choice. A smart modernisation of an old building; big rooms with high ceilings tastefully decorated with shutters, wall to wall wardrobe space, a full kitchen with an island and a laundry room. Very comfortable for 4 and a very high standard; much better value than York hotels.

York Experience

Our family of initially 3 arrived in York in September 2022 and if we liked the city we could stay for six months, we set ourselves the following three tasks: Task 1: Find Accommodation - a friend recommended Stays York and Amanda (Manager) listened to our needs and immediately knew we would like this apartment, its ambiance, it’s furnishing & appliances and location. ✅ Task 2: Find School and OBYE (pregnant wife) - Bootham Junior School (1.25 mile walk) accepted our son and we chose to have our second baby in London ✅ Task 3: Settle In & Enjoy York - when you wake up in a comfortable bed with fresh sheets & perfect pillows, have a great shower with fluffy towels and a cup of freshly ground coffee in a new kitchen the day is off to a good start. Walk my son to/from school, cardio work out 50 minutes, pick up Financial Times on way back at Sainsbury (100m from apartment) and walk 20m further to North South Cafe on Bootham Road, read paper have a cappuccino do a few emails all before 10:00am. Next walk into the centre of York (10 minutes) to Shambles Market and go see my friends at Swains Butcher (wonderfully terrific lamb, free range eggs, sausages, chicken, pork chops etc), the fish and cheese mongers next door and fruit veggie stall and decide what to have for dinner, pick up further necessities at M&S (2 minutes further) and return home through the Museum Gardens, home by 11:00am. Sitting at the big table in the open plan living, dining & kitchen area with sunshine coming through the oversized windows and high ceilings overlooking the garden while using the excellent and individual apartment secured/dedicated wifi, it’s very easy to be productive & creative and crank out emails and do a few call. Noonish start thinking about lunch almost always decide to heat up last nights leftovers either in the brand spanking new microwave or oven. Back to work, sometimes walk to Museum Garden to do emails, wifi works well there when in sight line of Apartment and at around 3:00pm walk to pick up my son from school back home by 4:00pm. Circa 5:00pm head to the Establishment on Bootham (150m from Apartment) order a pint from Carla (head barkeep) sit in their huge beer garden log onto their wifi do conference call to Canada/US (I know, very lucky and thank goodness for the mute function, video off). It’s 6:00pm and time to go to Minister Inn at 24 Marygate, conveniently 20m from the Apartment, say hello to Josh & Liam (barkeep/raconteur and best pizza chef in the universe respectively) have another pint and home by 7:00pm. Help with dinner, mash the potatoes, salad preparation and sort the dessert (often from Betty’s Cafe; Yorkshire tea fruit cake or vanilla slice with ice cream). Relax watch some TV, read stories with son and sleep and repeat for next few months. Time was flying to fast and with the changing seasons; Christmas was on the horizon, my wife almost 8 months pregnant and our family engrained into a terrific daily York routine and being considered an almost “local” at two watering holes, it was time to invited my in-laws from Canada to come and stay in the Museum Apartment below, my sister and niece from London as well as my wife’s uncle. York was to good to keep to our family of 3, we needed to share this oasis of Yorkshire with our loved ones. They as well have fallen for York. But unfortunately our time in York has come to an end and it’s back to Canada we must go with a newborn son, our family is now 4, great memories and new friends. It has been an A+ experience in York commencing with Stays York recommendation, the Apartment is top notch, karma is especially good for creative people, location superb and York has so much to offer and if you have the opportunity to stay for awhile give yourself a treat. If you come to York say hello to my friends at the Minster Inn (best little pub and pizza ever), the Establishment (best beer garden) Stays York (world class service) G’s Barber (on Bootham across from North South Cafe), Raj’s Indian Restaurant (next to the Establishment), Blake’s Fish n Chips (near Shambles Market), North South Cafe, Swains Butchers, Star Inn Restaurant (especially Sunday Roast), Roots Restaurant (romantic night out) and visit the many sites and attractions. We plan to be back in summer this year and if are plans come to fruition we will be staying here. All the best David
