In spite of some very lovely staff, this hotel is in an appalling state and desperately need of a facelift. Water damage on the walls, peeling paint, leaking toilets, a broken shower and windows that havenât been cleaned in years. The owners need to spend a lot of money on this establishment that must have been spectacular in the past, as neither it or the staff deserve it being left in this state.
A tale of 2 halfs really. Staff were all lovely, especislly the gorgeous girl who was running the breakfast room. Looked after my friend and i with a sea view both days and breakfast was delicious. Only downside was the room which is is dire need of an update. However, thd beds were vety comfy and we had a lovely sea view. I would return once the renovations are complete.
Handy for a visit to Whitby - very central and great views. Some of the rooms are a bit tired looking. Our bathroom has a full length window which overlooked thesin street and basically had a film on the window to make it opaque - the blind wasn't big enough to fit the whole window. So you feel a bit exposed when you're in there with the light on.
The fire alarm also went off in the middle of the night during our stay. Most guests were stood outside the hotel for quite some time. A handful of guests and staff members were inside. The fire brigade were called out and 30 minutes later the people stood inside the hotel foyer started to go back to their rooms. There was no communication with any of the guests outside - no staff member came out to speak to the guests or to check everyone was ok. No one appeared to be in control of the situation and guests who had followed the hotels own evacuation procedure were just left outside in the cold. Noone took a register to ensure all guests were present. I wouldn't like to have been staying there had there been a real file - the hotel procedures didn't appear to be very robust.
We paid extra for a sea view room. Yes we got a room on the 3rd floor with a wonderful view of Whitby. Unfortunately the lift is out of service for 3 months, a fact that we had not been told about when we booked. The room was very tired, the heating could not be adjusted meaning we had to sleep on top of the bed to keep cool. There were a lot of workmen milling around renovating the hotel. Maybe it might of been a good idea to close down for a couple of months. The breakfast could do with a little improvement and bigger size plates wouldn't go a miss. I'm sure when the hotel has been fully refurbished it may be worth another visit.
Food excellent. Staff very helpful. Accomodating. Friendly.
Currently renovating and looking fabulouse. Dinning room and food exquiset.
Lift is definatly being installed this year.
Fantastic location, reception staff very helpful especially Hannah who went above and beyond to sort a booking out Iâd done through a 3rd party with the wrong date. Hotel very comfortable and warm.
This hotel is bit of a throwback to the seaside hotels of years gone by and is fantastic. The hotel was undergoing renovations during our stay and so I will assume it will be even better once complete. But our stay was lovely, with the pleasant desk clerk making us feel welcomed and appreciated and the restaurant staff attentive and happy!
The pizza, beer and wine was excellent. We had 2 of the "cosy" rooms and the pictures included in the listing are accurate. I would absolutely stay here again and happily recommend to anyone.
This is a large old fashioned hotel on top of the cliff overlooking the harbour and abbey across the valley. It is under renovation at the moment and trying to keep things okay for customers. It succeeds to a degree.
Major renovation work taking place so the place was in upheaval. Hopefully it will be all finished for the summer. Be sure to book parking when booking as it is very limited.
Stay not too bad. Room small but clean. Had 300 pounds and purse with all documents in. In a a 3 hour. Time limit from 6 to 9 pm. Got t be someone with a key. Very upsetting will not go again đ
The staff were extremely polite and helpful. The location of The Royal Hotel was perfect, and although parts of the hotel were being renovated, there was no obvious disruption for the guests.
