Casa Saudade - An off-grid 'Earthship' in the mountains. This unique home is perched high up in the Mountains with 180degree views. Located at the top of a 4wd road, the solitude and quiet create a heavy sense of calm. If you are looking for an escape from everything... this is your spot. An Earthship stay is also a lesson in sustainable home life and slow living. We have created a luxe cozy feel here in the mountains of Taos... off-grid doesn't necessarily have to mean primative. Once you step into the Casa from the mudroom the main portion of the home is a single open space with an attached 'round' bedroom - which is the only enclosed area. This means that the kitchen/dining area are open to the living area a few steps up into a loft-like nook above. Down the short hallway are the bathroom area / built-in desk / office space and a few steps up land you into the Queen bedroom loft area. NOTE that in this main space none of the walls go to the ceiling - so even the bathroom is private but 'open air'. This can feel a little funky at first for us uber-private folk but it suits the space perfectly and is somewhat freeing to be honest! The home and its surroundings are as quiet as quiet can be - you can only hear the wind blowing through the trees and the chirping-like hum of the hummingbird's wings flitting about. Bees abound in the Russian Sage lining the patio area and the heavy calm that pervades is so relaxing that naps are definitely on the agenda. This home has a FEELING... we see people writing books here, reconnecting with themselves and loved ones, and spending time to just... BE. This home has SOURCE... a bit of MAGIC... and a ton of LOVE. We hope you too can FEEL it. Guests will have access to the whole house and the surrounding out door space. There is a shed and an Airstream at the top of the driveway that are private space for the owners only and will not be accessible for the guests. We leave guests to have their own, very private, experience while staying at Casa Saudade. However, should you have any questions we are easily available via email/text/phone. In case of urgent, in person, scenarios we do have local caretakers nearby as well. This is a very quiet neighborhood with homes lightly scattered throughout the drive up the canyon. The home is located at the very top of the canyon with only a few other homes beyond. Please note to be respectful of other homes in the area - everyone appreciates the solitude and quiet space and are here for that reason. The dirt road up to the home should be driven slowly and respectfully for the neighbor's sake. Thank you! Also note that this home is on a mountain top in the midst of a forest... so seeing wildlife is definitely a possibility. This is also why we do not leave any type of food or bags of trash outside. We like to keep the wildlife wild. There are 2 parking spots in the driveway - please no more cars than that. There are no cars allowed to park in the road as it is too narrow and would be dangerous for other travelers to have to navigate around, especially in winter time. This is not your typical vacation rental... which is what makes it extra special. For one, it is located 10 minutes up a dirt road at the top of mountain situated at 8,000'. This means 4WD only in the Winter/Spring months. This also means that you are not bopping in and out of town several times a day as it is so remote. We usually do a trip a day and then settle in... that's the magic of it. The home is built into the earth and perched on top of a ledge area with very steep natural surrounding earth. This means that it is important that anyone unsure of their stability and/or children should be watched/very careful in the outside area.... this is a steep mountain landscape. This home is completely off-grid and an 'earthship'.... We collect the rain from the sky to supply all of the water to the home. The power comes from solar panels near the roof. Because it is built into the earth, the home maintains a comfortable temperature year round with the right supplemental heating and cooling methods via the sun, woodstoves, and windows/vents allowing for a steady breeze to flow in from the valley below. The linens and bath towels are all organic and we use green cleaning supplies in the home as well. If you're part of the earth... you might as well be kind to it. For those of you planning to work during your stay - the wifi works well , AT&T does seem to have a bit better reception than Verizon (1-2 bars)... we have spent time working from home here, so definitely doable with both... but no fiber optics around here, if you know what i mean. ;)
