Things to Do in Savannah

A few blocks from Gaston Hideaway on Gaston Street is Forsyth Park. The large park features a beautiful fountain from 1858. It is a copy of the Place de la Concorde fountains in Paris. The park also has two playgrounds, basketball courts, tennis courts, open fields, a garden for the blind, and a concert and special events venue. Among the events held at the park is the Farmers Market on Saturdays.

The Savannah Center of Art and Design (SCAD) is next to Forsyth Park. This art college allows visitors to explore the artwork displayed on the grounds and in the art museum. You can also purchase some of the artwork created by the students.

Learn about historic Savannah on a walking tour. Check out what is available and select the ones that interest you. Make sure you also take a walking tour of haunted Savannah. The city has been declared the most haunted city in the US, so explore this side of Savannah. The haunted tours include locations such as the Mercer Williams house and the Colonial Park cemetery.

Savannah offers a variety of beautiful beaches. Some of the beaches provide the opportunity to birdwatch or watch the cargo ships. You can also take a riverboat cruise or trolley car tour, explore the waterfront, or visit the birthplace of Girl Scout founder Juliet Gordon Low.

Tybee Island offers a lighthouse, the Pier and Pavilion, the Tybee Post Theatre, the Fort Pulaski National Monument, and the Marine Science Center. Kayaking, jet-skiing, boat rentals, and chartered fishing expeditions allow you to get out on the water.

Where to Stay?

The Gaston Hideaway sleeps four with a living room, kitchen, a bedroom, and a bathroom. Southern Belle Vacation Rentals offers basic amenities in all their Savannah vacation homes allowing you to travel light. Amenities that you might not expect are linens, blankets, extra pillows, towels, a hairdryer, shampoo, hangers, an iron, and an ironing board. In their vacation rentals Savannah GA visitors can expect to find laptop-friendly housing with WiFi. The Gaston Hideaway provides heating and air conditioning. It also has a washer and dryer. For safety, it includes a smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector, and fire extinguisher. There is a private entrance with a lockbox, self-check-in, and outdoor lighting. There is both free and metered street parking.

The private entrance leads you upstairs to the kitchen in the Gaston Hideaway. The living room is part of an open area that includes the kitchen. It has two large windows for natural light. The living room has a sofabed, two straight chairs, a coffee table, a large-screen TV, a TV stand, another stand, and a table with two chairs.

Between the kitchen and the living room, there is another table that seats four. In the kitchen, Southern Belle Vacation Rentals provides a refrigerator-freezer, stove, microwave, dishwasher, coffeemaker, toaster, dishes, utensils, and cooking basics. This is everything you need except your food to prepare meals and snacks.

The bedroom is off the living room. It is furnished with a queen-size bed, two nightstands, a large-screen TV, a stand, and a free-standing, full-length mirror. There are two large windows for natural light.

There are doors to the bathroom from the bedroom and the kitchen. Therefore, the bathroom can be accessed without going through the bedroom. The bathroom includes a vanity with storage, a toilet, a mirror, and a walk-in shower.

Southern Belle Pool
Our guests have access to our beautiful, heated pool that is located at 19 Silver Ave, Tybee Island, GA 31328. For our Savannah properties it is a scenic 25-minute drive through Wilmington and Whitemarsh Island, taking you over the Savannah River Delta onto Tybee Island.

The Pool is open during the below dates and times.
March 1 - Oct 31: Open 7 days a week from 10am-5pm.
Nov 1 - Feb 28/29: Open Friday and Saturday from 10am-5pm

Additional Pool Hours available during the off-season are listed below. If these dates fall in the middle of the week, the pool will be open as listed below and every Friday and Saturday.

There was a little mishap with the keys when we first arrived; however, the host was very quick to take care of it. Enjoyed everything else about the apartment and location. Loved our time in Savannah!

The apartment was clean, and the bathroom was a highlight. The tile and amount of room as well as storage since we were there a month was helpful. The location was great for walking downtown, to Forsyth, the Starland district and even to Daffin Park.

Clean and comfortable stay close to Forsyth Park

Very comfortable stay near everything. We were close enough but far enough from the action on the river. We didn’t love the access to the apt rental with just one key instead of a code. Made it challenging when some of us stayed in the home- lots of up and down / locking and unlocking sharing the one key. No parking on the property but easy to find free street parking. Minimal items in the home as far as kitchen/ cleaning supplies but we made it work and purchased things at the local Aldi’s. Enjoyable stay overall!

Great space and location, but a few hiccups

The apartment is lovely and serene, just a few blocks from Forsythe Park. We had a couple issues though that are bringing the review down that I think can be easily addressed: 1) Our designated check in time was 4pm, and I drove all day from out-of-town to arrive at that time with two very hungry and tired children. At 3:30 I got a text saying the property would not be ready on time, and could take an extra hour and a half. We dealt, and it wasn't a huge deal, but if customers have to pay extra for early check-in or late check-out, I think the inverse should also be true. 2) When we finally went to the property at 5:30, the check in code we had for the lock was not correct. The code had been updated, causing us quite a bit of frustration at that point trying to figure out what we were doing wrong (I'm sure you can imagine the squabbling between my two kids as they each tried and failed several times to open the lock box :)). To be fair though, as soon as I texted the property manager asking for advice on the lock, she texted back with the right code, and it was quickly solved at that point. 3) With two kids in tow, we were counting on the sofa bed for use. After unfolding it we immediately realized it was broken, with the top section just collapsing down into the couch. The property manager offered to bring over an air mattress, which we appreciated, but my teenage son declined and opted to sleep on the floor instead. In a nutshell, the apartment is great, and the location is fantastic. The property managed communicated well. Our stay would have have been perfect but for these hiccups that I think can be easily fixed for future guests.

Poor Misrepresented property

This property is not as it is presented on VRBO, it is in a rather sketchy neighbourhood, there is NO, I repeat NO pool access at the address only on Tybee Island which is a 1/2 hour taxi ride $'s. The linens weren't clean, the beds don't sleep 4, only 2 people can sleep comfortably here. You are in the historic district which is good for site seeing, but too far from downtown to walk in the hot Georgian sun. You will need to use uber to go downtown, which is River Street that's the only place really that is active in Savannah. There is no outdoor space, in the front you have a rot iron gate to open and garage door, in the back wooden gates locked because it's another persons back yard. You feel like you're in a prison. So no I don't recommend this property, and wish I had researched it better before leaving. I will say the unit itself was pleasant enough, but it wasn't clean, or worth the money, overpriced. The free commute on the DOT trolley and Savannah Downtowner car service saved us, so we didn't have to pay uber prices every day. I suggest doing your research thoroughly before going to any VRBO especially the location.

Great location!

My mother and I enjoyed our stay in the apartment! It was a great location being so near to Forsyth Park and the historic district. The apartment was the perfect size for two people and is nicely updated, cute, and clean. One thing that could be improved is that the apartment is listed as sleeping four people with one bedroom/bed and a sofa bed. However, the sofa bed mattress was not stable or supported on the frame and though it had sheets on the mattress, we did not find a blanket. We did not feel that four people could sleep there comfortably. Otherwise we had everything we needed in the apartment. Also, the instructions for checking in and accessing the apartment were clear and helpful except that replacing the lock box cover was a bit tricky which was indicated in the check-out instructions but not clarified or explained how to actually replace it. When I texted the property manager to inquire about this, she responded quickly and explained clearly how to replace the cover. It would be helpful for renters and for the property manager I would think to add this to the check-in/out instructions. It is also important for renters to pay attention to pool access being limited to certain days of the week depending on the time of year. Overall, it was great for us! If we went back to Savannah, we would consider staying at the apartment again!

No Value here

Zero parking--even though it has a garage.. Loud street kept us from sleeping because the walls were paper thin, not to mention it felt like the bed was 10 years old. The garage underneath the unit opens EVERY day at 7 am so the owner (presumably) can go to work-- an unexpected wake up call. Smelled like paint the whole time. Only the most basic of cable channels. Most places for this money at least have HBO. No shampoo, better bring it. No coffee, better bring it. (Again, for the $ you'd think they might treat you to a pot or 2). Better get salt, pepper and laundry soap too if you need it. I tried for two days to talk to the manager and finally just gave up. Buyer beware here because the nicest thing about this place is the check out.

Right Place for the Price

The apartment was a nice play to stay. It was clean, updated and nicely laid out. The actual apartment doesn’t seem to fit in with the street and surrounding buildings, which are looking pretty run down and industrial. The only thing that would deter me from staying here again was the brightness of the place and the street noise. We are light sleepers so that made for some nights of not the best sleep. But otherwise it’s a good place, a couple blocks from Forsyth Park and several good places to eat.

Great Location!

Great location in Savannah's Downtown Historic District! The place was clean and well-appointed. However, there are a couple of much-needed items - hangers in the closets (there are NONE) and hooks in the bathroom (nowhere to hang towels).
