Lake Como offers some of the most evocative urban, landscape and architectural gems of the entire Italian peninsula. The reasons why this lake is famous throughout the world are many, first and foremost for the beauty of its landscapes: the lake is surrounded by mountains and hosts numerous fishing villages, splendid villas, parks and scenic routes. Lake Como covers an area of 146 kmÂČ, its characteristic inverted Y shape is given by the three branches that compose it: to the north Colico, to the south-east Lecco and to the south-west Como. The climate is generally mild and humid, favouring the growth of rich and varied vegetation. Picturesque and characteristic are the towns that overlook the waters of Lake Como. The best way to discover the beauties of the lake is by sailing its waters. The main urban centre is Como, a very beautiful, elegant, romantic city that hosts several villas, monuments and a very scenic waterfront. However, there are many villages worth visiting: on the Como branch stand out Bellagio the pearl of Lario, Cernobbio, Argegno, Tremezzo with its Villa Carlotta, Menaggio and the ancient village of Nesso characterised by numerous romantic views. On the eastern shore of the lake, dominated by Lecco, it is worth visiting Varenna and Bellano with its characteristic Orrido. This destination is also perfect for lovers of trekking and outdoor walks: numerous are the trails present in the area such as the Sentiero del Viandante (40 km) which starts from Abbadia Lariana to Piantedo and the Greenway of Lake Como (approximately 10 km) which connects Colonno and Cadenabbia.
