Cabin on the Creek, streamside Mazama retreat
Cabin on the Creek is one of local legend Jack Wilson’s historic cabins at Wilson Ranch in Mazama. This studio cabin sits directly beside Early Winters Creek and features a well equipped galley kitchen, a studio style living area with a king bed, and a classic stone built gas fireplace anchoring the room. The cabin is steps from the Methow Trails year round system. Pets are welcome.
The Space:
Cabin on the Creek is a charming studio cabin located on the historic Freestone Inn Wilson Ranch property. Originally built in 1948 by ranch owner Jack Wilson, the cabin has been thoughtfully updated while retaining its historic character.
The single room serves as both bedroom and living space, with a king bed and a stone built gas fireplace. The front door opens into a galley kitchen with a two element electric cooktop, under counter refrigerator, microwave, sink, coffee maker, and a good selection of kitchen utensils and equipment. The bathroom is compact and includes a shower.
A separate door from the main room opens onto a small deck with a propane BBQ grill and a pair of Adirondack chairs, with a picnic table nearby. The cabin sits just a few short yards from Early Winters Creek.
The Methow Trails year round system is just steps away and is widely recognized as one of the finest Nordic ski trail networks in North America, with excellent mountain biking, trail running, and hiking in warmer months. North Cascade Heli Skiing also operates from Wilson Ranch, making this a convenient option for heli skiers. Guests should expect to see and hear helicopter takeoffs and landings during ski season.
Dogs are welcome. Cabin on the Creek is one of two adjacent studio cabins. Please see our listing for Creekside Bunkhouse if you are interested in booking both side by side. The cabin is set back approximately 200 feet from Highway 20 at the Early Winters Creek bridge and is partially screened from the road by mature trees and shrubs.
The Neighborhood:
MAZAMA
Wilson Ranch is located 2 miles (approximately a 10 minute bike ride) from the Mazama Store and the Methow Trails trailhead, providing access to hiking, mountain biking, cross country skiing, and snowshoe trails. In addition to the store, known for its renowned bakery and groceries, Mazama is home to the Goat’s Beard outdoor store, which offers mountain bike and fat bike rentals, the Mazama Ski School for cross country ski lessons and rentals, and the popular Mazama Public House for local brews, food, and live music.
Please note that the restaurants at the Freestone Inn. Jack's Hut and Sandy Butte Bistro, may not be currently operating. Please check directly with Freestone Inn.
NORTH CASCADES NATIONAL PARK
Cabin on the Creek is conveniently situated for access to the North Cascades National Park and the trailheads to many of the park’s world class hiking routes. The Cutthroat Lake trailhead is under a 20 minute drive, Washington Pass is approximately 25 minutes away, and the Maple Pass trailhead is about 30 minutes. This location is well suited for early starts and for securing trailhead parking during peak seasons.
WINTHROP
The cabin is also just 14 miles from the historic western town of Winthrop, known for its shops, art galleries, bakeries, and dining establishments. Local highlights include the Shafer Museum, which offers insight into the area’s history, and the Winthrop Rink, one of North America’s only NHL sized outdoor ice rinks. In winter, the rink hosts a variety of ice activities, while in summer it features active sports courts and pickleball.
Winthrop’s annual events include the Rhythm and Blues Festival, the Vintage Car Rally, Memorial and Labor Day Rodeos, and Christmas at the End of the Road. Please check the town’s website for current event details.
Getting Around:
Getting Here
From May through November, guests travelling from Seattle and the west side can drive over State Route 20 via Washington Pass, often referred to as the scenic “American Alps.” Alternate and winter routes from Seattle include I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass and Blewett Pass, or Highway 2 over Stevens Pass. Driving conditions and pass status should always be checked with WSDOT in advance. Together, these routes form part of the Cascade Loop Scenic Highway.
The nearest major airports are Spokane International Airport, approximately 180 miles away and accessible year round, and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, approximately 190 miles away in summer and 260 miles in winter. Regional flights are also available at Pangborn Memorial Airport in Wenatchee, located about 102 miles from Mazama.
Getting Around
The nearest winter trail access is the Methow Community Trail. The Mazama Store is approximately 2 miles away, or a 10 minute bike ride. Winthrop is 14 miles away, about an 18 minute drive.
Okanogan County Transit Authority’s TranGO service provides transportation between Twisp and Mazama Monday through Saturday, generally operating from approximately 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.
Other Things to Note:
Cabin on the Creek is a privately owned studio cabin located on the Wilson Ranch property.
Guests of Cabin on the Creek have access to the seasonal pool and hot tub at The Freestone Inn; guests do not currently have access to The Freestone Inn main lodge unless dining (if Sandy Butte Bistro is open).
The cabin sleeps two adults, an additional infant or child under 4 is also welcome (you would need to make your own sleeping arrangements e.g. bring a pack and play, or co-sleep).
Heating is provided by wall heaters and the gas fireplace. There is a window mounted air-conditioner provided during the summer.
The cabin has starlink wifi.
Please note there is NO dishwasher.
The cabin has a Moccamaster coffee maker, as well as a coffee grinder.
Pets allowed: up to 2 dogs are allowed for a fee of $50 per pet, per stay.
For winter stays, a local snow plowing service takes care of the Wilson Ranch roads. Please be patient after snow storms as they have many properties to clear. You will need to shovel the entryway area.
