The Neighborhood:
Camberwell:
Camberwell certainly bears the marks of two very different worlds â from the local population to the growing trendy student and artist crowd (centred around Camberwell College of Arts and the nearby South London Gallery). Camberwell Green which marks Camberwellâs living centre leads on all sides towards a blend of bars that grow ever trendier each year, fried chicken joints, charming delicatessens and a mixture of the usual High Street stores.
Peckham:
Filled with amazing cafés, restaurants, parks, things to do and things to see, Peckham has the added joy that nothing is too touristy or overdone. Many of Peckham's restaurants, bars and cafes are independent and a short walk away. Franks rooftop bar is a particularly popular spot with incredible views of central london including The Shard & The London Eye.
Peckham Rye Common is one of the best (and lesser known) parks in London, with landscaped parks, wooded areas, picnic spots, Japanese gardens, ponds, playgrounds and loads of parakeets living in the trees.
Getting Around:
Camberwell:
Denmark Hill has trains to Victoria (12 mins); London Bridge, (22 mins, change at Peckham Rye); Farringdon (18 mins) and St Pancras (22 mins).
Overground trains go to Shoreditch High Street and Thameslink runs from Loughborough Junction to Farringdon (15 mins) and St Pancras (20 mins).
Fifteen bus routes pass through the town centre. Camberwell is in Zone 2
Peckham:
Rail: Queens Road Peckham and Peckham Rye stations have regular services to London Bridge (10 and 12 minutes respectively), as well as being on the London Overground network. Peckham Rye also offers regular services to Victoria in 12 minutes.
Bus: There are a plethora of buses that go through Rye Lane, including 37 (to Putney), 343 (to City Hall), 63 (Kingâs Cross), 484 (to Lewisham) and 12 (to Oxford Circus).
Road: The roads tend to be busy in this area and most locals prefer to use public transport. The M25 is about 45 minutes away for those travelling further afield.
Cycle: There are dedicated covered cycle stands at Peckham Rye station, monitored by CCTV. Peckham Cycle Club is a local group that offers group ride outs for all standards, from beginners to experienced riders.
Getting away: Gatwick is about an hour away by car, or easily accessible by train via Clapham Junction.
