Bad! Seemed to just be there as a way of milking cash from tired walkers of the Hadrians wall. Room was in a pretty bad condition and included a hole in the wall exposing live electrical wires. 1 tiny radiator which was useless for drying wet gear from hiking. Some of the plugs in the room you couldnât even use as they were non standard UK plugs. The menu prices at the restaurant were ridiculous for what you got and the service was pretty lacklustre.
Evening meal choice was ok with fish chips and peas. But expected more choice for a evening at a hotel.
Breakfast was extremely disappointing was shown to my table and just left. Realised it myself was self service from adjoining room. Waiter didn't seem interested!
Machine drinks - why can't they be made on request fresh? Didnt bother with any drink!
Self service for hot items, didnt look appetising. Sausage was bland, tasteless and tasted mushy inside. Tomato was hard both in middle and outside- how can a cook not get these cooked right?
Did tell this to reception when checking out but said we will pass comments on but didnt honestly seem interested!
Had previously stayed at this hotel under previous owners and it was so much better. Really gone downhill.
Maybe I got a bad bedroom but I was not impressed with this hotel. Carpet was dirty, paint work chipped, nail in wall but picture missing, bed squeaked. Had to go up 1 flight of stairs to bedroom along a corridor then down another flight of stairs, with luggage is not ideal (no lift).
Not a hotel I would return to - I did not sleep well because my room did not feel clean, I did mention this to reception but was advised some rooms had been updated and had new carpet and some hadn't.
Hotel is old and in vwry poor condition. Room was absolutely freezing even with the heating on. Shower was scalding hot. Overall just a very run down hotel
Went to the George for a valentine's treat , luvly place full of character , & great service all staff very helpful and friendly, would not hesitate in going again
We married here 30 years ago so nice to return for the nostalgia. Lovely communal areas with log burners and very cosy. the setting by the river is perfect and the gardens lovely. Location is amazing for walking/biking. Please just spend a bit of money on the rooms. They are tired with cheap furniture and it would only take a bit of TLC in the rooms for this to be a perfect hotel. We would definitely return but a fefurb is needed.
Wonderful two night stay. Like others I noted some of the mixed reviews but our stay was excellent. This is a 3* hotel and easily hits the mark, yes a few areas with wear ân tear but room and bathroom was clean, restaurant was really nice serving good food and a wide choice. Staff were all excellent; weâd definitely stay again if in the area!!
Wonderful stay at the George Hotel. Extremely helpful staff, in particular Sakie, who ensured we had everything we needed. Would definetly stay again, a great, cosy countryside retreat.
Took a little bit of a gamble after reading some of the reviews but very glad we did. Yes, the hotel could do with a bit of tlc in places but, on the whole, itâs a very pleasant place to stay, excellent staff and very good food. Thoroughly recommended
