The Neighborhood:

Located about two miles east of Downtown Austin, Govalle – Swedish for “good grazing” – began as a cattle ranch during the mid-1800s. Today, it’s a popular neighborhood with easy access to downtown as well as to the University of Texas at Austin. The neighborhood extends north from the Colorado River to Rosewood Avenue in East Austin. The Boggy Creek passes through the heart of Govalle and the Boggy Creek Greenbelt is located on either side of the neighborhood.



Govalle is a highly rated neighborhood by Austinites, who frequently regard Govalle as the "happening" area. The entire landscape of the neighborhood is dotted with entertainment, dining, shopping, gyms, transportation, and friendly neighbors. Living in Govalle means never being bored.



The food in Govalle is just as diverse as its people's interests and activities. Vegans will have no shortage of options here. Big chain fast food restaurants are abundant as with most busy areas, but the foods that really seem to define the neighborhood are Latino and American. From Tex Mex and authentic Mexican to Salvadorian and great hamburgers, there is sure to be a restaurant to make your taste buds happy. Fine dining is available in Govalle as well.



At night this busy neighborhood, full of shoppers and people riding busses during the day, turns into another equally diverse setting. Theaters can be found all around Govalle as well as a wide range of dining. The bar scene is extremely strong from trendy clubs to sports bars to local pubs. College students from Austin Community College and the University of Texas are out in full force as the vast majority of places cater to a younger crowd - although there are plenty of low-key bars for a quieter night.



Getting Around:

East Austin is a walkable and bike-friendly neighborhood with easy access to rideshares like Uber and Lyft, as well as electric scooters from Lime and Bird. Public transit options include CapMetro buses and the MetroRail, which connects to downtown and beyond. For those driving, street parking is available but can be limited in busy areas, so consider using paid parking lots or garages when exploring.

Great, but hot

The only reason this property didn't get 5 stars from me is because it was very warm in the upstairs bedroom. We had our toddler with us. We keep an indoor thermometer with us for overnights and it was reading 81 degrees when we put him down for bed each night. It was 77 when we woke him up. It was difficult for me to sleep in such high temps, as well. The owner had in the rules not to put it below 72, and the thermostat also seemed to be on a timer that kept bumping the temperature up so we had to keep adjusting it down. And we stayed here in early March. I can't imagine staying in one of those rooms in the heat of a Texas summer. Otherwise, I really enjoyed my stay here. One of the better VRBOs I've stayed in.
