Holding the accolade of England's highest market town, it boasts lovely cobbled streets with shops and eateries, and was the filming location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Take a trip on the restored diesel engine railway heading through the South Tyne Valley, or enjoy the excellent walking terrain all around.
