Nice place but...

It was a nice place, but a bit to over priced in my opinion. There are several other hotels in the same plaza for less. Location was great, but there was nothing special about the hotel except the location. THey should at least have had WIFI in rooms.

Good location, basic, nice staff, but...

Taxi drops you off at the Piazza, not directly in front of the hotel, as there is no parking there. They have a nice bellman and front desk young woman is very personable to welcome you. Our room, a triple, was very basic, two twins with a single separated a bit. One window, no view, yet quiet, but poor ventilation. Noticed that the bathtub had a previous guest's hair sitting in plain sight and some lack of cleaning in the corners. Biggest problem was that the smoke smell was so strong that it kept me awake... whether it was coming from the hallway or leftover from the past. I told the manager and he did not adjust the cost but offered a free night upon a future visit. (I'm not planning on coming back). Breakfast was adequate, nothing that special, but good. The room was pleasant, but no windows or view. We paid about $300 for one night (3 in our family) and I'd say it was worth about $200 ... but again, with the smoke smell, it was not worth it. I do not have a suggestion, as I emailed and received confirmation twice that the room would be non-smoking, but as stated it was not. Very good location, for when you walk out there's the Pantheon, the piazza and around the corner Piazza Navone. There are nice little restaurants, and the hotel can recommend one that was good, not great, but nice enough. If they were to do a refreshening, update the hotel, hire a cleaning crew, then you'd have a nice little spot. For now, it's all about location and if you can get it, a low price, but lower your expectations.

Gain de temps: Short walk from hotel

Get a map of the area before you arrive so you can have a sense of where you are, what's around you and what you might want to see. The hotel has a map, but it's hard to see.

Great Location

A true 5 star hotel is very expensive in the center of Rome (expect to pay about $400 and up per night). I thought this was a decent hotel, a 3 star at best but the location is phenomenal. The hotel is located in the center of Rome, literally 100 feet from the Pantheon. The rooms are very small & the hotel is a bit old. The staff was friendly & helpful. If you are in Rome to do some site seeing, this location is the center of it all. Many other exciting monuments and historical locations are within walking distance.

Big rooms, good location, poor quality

This was the 6th and most expensive hotel we stayed at in Italy, and the only one which really disappointed us. If the three most important qualities of a good hotel room are cleanliness, comfortable beds, and nice bathrooms, then our rooms at the Albergo del Sole al Pantheon were a failure. If, however, you consider the three most important qualities to be location, size, and sparkling wine for breakfast then this is the place for you. The hotel is located right at the Pantheon, which is a great location, but our family of six got stuck up in 2 of the "Annex Suites," which are located on the second (third by American reckoning) floor of an ancient apartment building across the square and up another street from the main hotel. We had made our reservations through Orbitz and didn't know we were in the annex until we arrived--live and learn. It meant a two block round trip across the piazza for breakfast and internet (only available in the lobby). Our rooms were huge (the whole family could have fit in just one of the apartments if the kids were a bit younger), but they were on the second floor so there was a trek up two flights of grimy stairs to reach them. There is an elevator, but it's approximately the size of a dumbwaiter. All of the hotels we visited were old and had minor defects due to age, but they were all cleaner and better maintained than this one. Floors and walls were dirty, the modern living room furniture was neither new nor clean, some of the antique dining chairs were falling apart, a mirror and tiles were cracked, sheets were pilled, light fixtures were loose, you get the picture. The bathrooms were cheaply appointed and barely big enough to change in, and one of them smelled like cheese because there was mold growing in the corners and in the shower. The other bathroom had a shower stall that leaked by design. We couldn't open the shutters on the huge windows to let in sunlight, so the rooms were always dark and dingy. The shutters were nailed shut to keep the large, loud, stand alone, air conditioners running efficiently, but it was an unacceptable tradeoff much of the time. It was admittedly tastefully coordinated and had nice draperies. We appreciated the large space but were not comfortable in it because of its condition. This was a rather expensive hotel, reasonably priced only for the 4 star well-located hotel we thought we were getting, but the annex is NOT 4 star quality, unless you place unusually great emphasis on having a bathrobe, slippers, and cappucino maker.

Absolutely a very god location

Absolutely a very god location when walking around in the old town of Rome. To be able to walk directly into the Pantheon from your hotel in just halv a minute is fantastic. Go in there several times a day and disvover how different it looks with the sun comming in from above shining on different parts of the building all the time. We enjoyed our stay very much, also the very nice and serviceminded attitude of the receptions persons.

A nice hotel with excellent location

We stayed at this hotel for five nights and highly recommend it. The hotel's location and tastefully decorated rooms make it a very good value for the money. The breakfast was excellent with choices of cheeses ,meats, breads and of course many types of coffees. The staff was very friendly and helpful. For example when we complained that the central air conditioning unit was a bit noisy at night, they gave us the option to choose from few available rooms on lower floors and immediately moved us to a quieter room.

Dîner: Short walk from hotel

Don't miss Giolitti at Via Uffici del Vicario 40, it is one of the best gellato shops in Rome and very close to the hotel
