Rooms better than the rest of the hotel

It is very hard to find a conveniently located hotel in Rome for an affordable price. Hotel Doge certainly fit that bill but we were concerned of what we would find there. The location is indeed fantastic, no more than 5 minutes walk to the Trevi Fountain and the Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps). When we checked in, we were too early and the front desk staff, who could have been friendlier, told us to leave our luggage in the adjoining room. The room already had quite a few suitcases and was not secured at all. In fact, we were left all alone in there with other guests' suitcases. Not reassuring. After a great lunch nearby, we returned and our room was ready. The elevator is tiny and is definitely not recommended for anyone with any remote trace of claustrophobia! We decided to throw our bags in it, push the button and race it upstairs... all the way to the 4th floor... We would come to dread these stairs! The room was small, but the bed was reasonably comfortable. It featured air conditioning and a window with a view of balconies of people's apartments. The bathroom was immaculate and a bit larger than usual european downtown hotels. Breakfast was included and was pretty basic. A roll and some pre-packaged pastries, but the cappuccino was decent. With a little work to restore and repaint the walls in the common areas and the stairs, this hotel would look a lot better. Of course, it's pretty basic, but the price is reasonable, and the location perfect.

location good bathrooms good, rooms

first of all, we went in nov, so the daylight is short, so i definetly recommend going anytime before the changing of the clocks. i dont recommend summer time, b/c there's more pick pocketers. someone tried to pickpocket my husband, but he caught them b4 they could take anything. besides we kept our money well hidden. we were in rome 5 days and stayed in 2 hotels. because we were meeting friends later on at the sheraton, but until we met up with them stayed at hotel doge. we stayed there because of location. i do not recommend this hotel if you are with kids. only because they would complain. also if you are claustaphobic, don't go in the elevators. its so tiny and whats weird is you have to go up a half floor to get it. 1 time we were waiting for a long time for the elevator and it didnt come, so my husband told me to go down the steps while he brings the bags to check out. i noticed that someone didn't close the door to the elevators a floor down, so if the doors of the elevators aren't closed properly the elevator wont work. location: very good and walking distance from spagna metro station. bathrooms: were fairly clean (3 1/2 star) breakfast: just a basket of croissants, bread, and assorted jams and coffee and juice. the basket is set on the table. (2 star) rooms: at first glance i felt that it was a 2 1/2 star out of 5 based on u.s. standards. Mostly because the comforter looked like it needed a good launder, but once that was removed, sheets were clean. knowing that we were going to a better hotel made the stay fine. However, if you want to be near the trevi fountain, spanish steps, this is the place to be. Metro is just 2 or 3 blocks away. Rome is very walkable, my husband is in his mid 40's and i'm in my 30's we walked everywhere, including to the colosseum which seems so far based on the map, but its not that bad. regarding sheraton conference center: well thats a 5 star compared to hotel doge. it also is near a metro station, but its very confusing to walk from there to hotel. until you know where to walk, use the bus and its the 1st stop. sheraton doesn't have a good location, but once you hop on the metro, its like a 20 min ride to the main terminal and then change lines to whatever stop that you need to go. i am not an uppity person, but hotel doge was not upto par. i recommend it mainly b/c of location. if you look at it as a place to fall asleep and head out, then this is for you. when we went to the sheraton, we would leave at 8am and get back at 1am, so we didn't really get to enjoy the benefits of staying in a nicer hotel. so it depends on what you are looking for.

Hotel Doge

Nice quaint hotel. Further from Spanish Steps than anticipated. Warm comfortable bed with flatscreen and clean bathroom. Decent service. Breakfast was poor but good coffee.

good location but nothing pretty

the hotel has a great location, the frontdesk attention was nice, the building are not so pretty and you can find somethging better for the same price, but it was clean, but It has NO CONFORT, you can hear every noise of the street. The breakfast was poor (coffe, orange juice and bread or croasaint whith butter)

Hotel Doge

My boyfriend and I were traveling through several European cities, and we stayed in Hotel Doge for the Roman leg of our trip. The hotel was simple to reach on foot from the train station, and we were easily able to walk to various sites, restaurants, and bars. The room itself was very small, but had everything we needed (i.e. bed, bathroom with shower). The room was a bit loud. We often left the windows open as the hotel requires you pay extra for AC. After a while with the window open, it would get too loud to sleep, and we would have to close the windows. In this way, it's a constant struggle between being cool and having a quiet room. Overall though it wasn't bad. It was cool enough to be tolerable, and the room was a good deal for the area. The breakfast is also nothing to speak of. It's free but only includes a basket which is already placed on the tables consisting of a couple packaged croissants, a roll, and some packaged crackers along with a plate of packaged jellies and butters. The hotel staff waits the tables to bring coffee and juice. We stopped by for coffee and juice and then left to have a real meal elsewhere.

Dîner: Short walk from hotel

Restaurants and bars are employed by the shiestiest staff that we encountered in Europe. Be prepared to pay for bread and water (even if you don't consume them), service and cover charges, and terrace charges. Even if you are aware of these charges before hand, employees without fail manage to throw in some new charges you don't expect. You never really know how much a meal is going to be until you get the bill. For example, in one case the menu for a restaurant listed the service charge as 10% and then when we received the bill, there was a 15% charge. When I questioned the charge the employee muttered something about service plus cover. In another instance, the menu listed bread as 2 euros. The employees then brought 2 different types of bread to our table. To clarify, I asked the employee if the bread was 2 euros altogether. He confirmed. The bill then listed the bread as 4 euros. When we asked him about it, he stated that is was 2 euros per person and tried to show us the menu (which says nothing about it being per person). Even though differences in price are usually over just a couple euro, expect to feel constantly ripped off. If you are staying in Rome for more than 4 or so days, I would recommend renting an apartment so that you can prepare meals at home. This would majorly cut down on travel costs.

As expected, stay here if u just

As expected, stay here if u just want a place to rest your tired body after a long hard walk. A place to house your luggage; even for a quick run amidst your busy sightseeing schedule; to drop your shopping; a short nap or even a toilet break. If u are used to the big nice cozy 4 or 5 star hotels, stay away from here! great location if u like to wander around the spanish steps, terevi fountains.....
